DIARY OF THE RE-MODELLING OF OUR HOME IN SANTA LUZIA, PORTUGAL.
23rd March Day one. A tidy little pile of salvaged tiles from the roof.
24th March Day 2. The remains of the roof coverings on the terrace
24th March. The rubble is transferred to the yard and from there to the van for removal
25th March. All tiles removed the rooves are sheeted up in case of overnight rain.
25th. March.Sheeted up for the night.
26th March. All timber work now removed.
26th March. Timber and rubble awaits removal on the terrace
26th March. Rubble and wood waiting to be removed. The bamboo canes which formed the origional cielings can be clearly seen in this shot.
4th April. Lots of work has gone on inside to form the concrete pillars that the ring beam and these preformed cocrete beams and blocks will rest on.
The guys removing the existing railings to build the conecting platform from the old terrace to the new.
4th April. Concrete laid and sheeted up to dry. The steelwork for the platform to connect the 2 terraces can be seen in the foreground RHS.

6th April. Well into the second week and the floating platform has been formed with poured concrete.
9th April. The shuttering for the new stairs in what was only a couple of weeks ago our bedroom.

9th April. The original door between the back living room and kitchen removed and widened to allow more light in.
9th April. The wall with the mirror is coming down to form a spacious new kitchen where the old bathroom and kitchen were.

15th May. The new stairs are going in and the first fix electrics can clearly be seen.
15th May. The wall round the platform connecting the old roof terrace to the new.
18th May. The new steps are almost complete.

!8th May. The wall seperating the old kitchen and bathroom is gone.
18th May. The space which will eventually be the new enlarged kitchen.
18th May. The new terrace is felted and sealed ready for final surface.
19th May. pre installation for the new air conditioning in the new enlarged living room.

19th May. The final screed goes down on the new terrace, tiles will complete the job. The marble threshold for the patio doors is also now in situ.
25th May. We returned from a weekend in Lisbon to find our new terrace fully tiled
25th May. The same tiles follow through into the bedroom and bathroom.
29th May. The old back door and kitchen window along with the wall are gone and will be replaced with sliding patio doors.
29th May. The plumbing for the upstairs bathroom .

4th June. The trench in the yard for the new sewers.
4th June. The bathroom is tiled and ready for grouting.
4th June. The outside is to be painted to match the rest of the house and first on is the yellow frame to the door and window.
6th June . The windows and door are installedand the interior walls have been treated prior to painting.
6th June. The patio doors and bedroom window are in and the outside is painted.
6th June. The bathroom tiles are grouted.
9th June. In goes the bath. No doubt the rest of the sanitary ware will quickly follow.
9th June the freshly painted bedroom looks spacious.
9th June. The new terrace wall is painted to match and the house barely looks any different.
14th June. The old bathroom and kitchen are now one room and the new suspended ceiling is installed.
14 th June. The old floor tiles downstairs are removed trenches dug and the plumbing for the new downstairs toilet under the steps is in.
14th June.The bath installation is now complete.
14th June. The original sun terrace has been insulated and waterproofed and the tiles are going down.

June 16th. Shower screen, bath taps and toilet are now installed.

17th June. The new downstairs toilet under the steps starts to take shape.
17th June. The yard is completely stripped and the drainage is installed.
21st June. The old walls downstairs are re-plastered, and what a difference!
21st June. The spacious new lounge with it's newly plastered walls.
21st June. Upstairs the electricians have been busy on the final fix.
21st June the plumbing is now complete and working.
21st June. the "smallest room" under the steps just needs plaster outside and tiles inside,
23rd June. Electric points are installed in kitchen and downstairs floors are cemented
23rd June. Outside light fittings are in.
23rd June. The freshly plastered walls and cemented floor in the new enlarged living/dining room.

27th June. The walls of the downstairs loo are plastered and the door frame is installed
28th June The first of the downstairs floor tiles is laid.
30th June. The downstairs tiles are laid and await grouting.
1st July The tiles downstairs are grouted.
1st July The outside downstairs is ready for tiling.
1st July The kitchen floor is tiled and preparation work has begun on the walls.
2nd July the outside yard is tiled and ready for grouting.
3rd July. the first of the kitchen tiles go on the wall.
4th July. Good progress on the kitchen tiles.
7th July The kitchen tiles are finished and grouted.
16th July. The downstairs toilet is installed and the door frame is fitted.
16th July. The new super size patio doors between the kitchen and quintal (yard).

16th July. During the summer we eat in the yard most days and the new patio doors make the outside and inside spaces flow together.
18 the July. preparation work on the kitchen units.
18th July. the new living room is almost clear. Just the new kitchen work tops lean against the wall awaiting installation.
20th July. The kitchen is more or less complete with new worktops, appliances and sink.

25th July. We moved back in 2 days ago and have been steadily organizing things. New house, old furniture and still a lot of bits to finish, but home at last.
